1-Amino-2-hydroxy-3-heterocycloxypropanes of the formula <IMAGE> in which Y represents the group -CH= or the group -N=, R1 denotes hydrogen, hydroxyl, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, R2 denotes hydroxyl, lower alkoxy or, together with R1, o-lower alkylidenedioxy or o-lower alkylenedioxy and R3 denotes lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen or cyano, where the radicals R1, R2 and R3 are in each case bonded to any of the possible aromatic carbon atoms desired, or their salts, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <IMAGE> or a salt thereof, with a compound of the formula <IMAGE> or a salt thereof, in which one of the groups X6 and X7 represents a reactive esterified hydroxyl group and the other represents the primary amino group and X5 represents the hydroxyl group, or in which X5 and X6 together denote the epoxy group and X7 represents the primary amino group, and Y, R1, R2 and R3 have the above meanings, and optionally converting a free compound obtained into a salt or a salt obtained into a free compound. Such compounds have blocking activities on adrenergic beta -receptors and adrenergic alpha -receptors and can therefore be used for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, angina pectoris and hypertension.
