Purified uranium is produced by dissolving uranium in liquid zinc, e.g. at 800 DEG C., cooling the solution until the compound UZn9 crystallizes out, separating the crystals from the liquid zinc and vaporizing the zinc. The process may be adapted to the production of uranium from binary compounds thereof such as UO2, UO3 or UF4, the compound being added to a melt of an alloy of zinc and magnesium which latter metal reduces the compound to liberate metallic uranium. To purify the uranium a plurality of fractional crystallizations may be employed. |
