A device for drying lengths of material is disclosed, especially a papermaking machine vapour hood, in which high temperature air is fed in and moist dryer air is withdrawn. The residual heat is made use of by means of a heat pump which is included in a circuit in the feed and return duct and consists of a compressor-turbine assembly. The power difference is made up by an external drive.
