Rapid action coupling for drive plate to grinder - uses ramped face return sprung sliding sleeve to move balls into sockets and effect axial lock

The coupling connects a rotary grinder (M) to a drive plate (10) equipped (14) for connection to a driving spindle. The grinder may be built onto a shoe (2) and pins (7) project from the plate to enter blind holes in the shoe to ensure that rotation is transmitted from the plate to the grinder. Axial locking may be effected by balls (13) in plate flange windows, engaging cavities in the external face of the shoe. A spring loaded sliding sleeve (21) is used to lock the balls in the sockets. The sleeve has offset internal surfaces (22,23) connected by a ramp (24). The inset face (23) and the ramp form a groove, locating the balls when the plate is withdrawn, and the other face (22) holds the balls in the sockets when the plate has been advanced onto the grinder.
