The device comprises a load-bearing cross member 1, held by two supports 2 each one having two lateral faces 29 which are substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the cross member, and connected to each other by a frontal face 28 of the support. A tightening screw 5 traverses the frontal face 28, and controls a tightening member 3. Shaped notches 32 are provided on the edges 31 of the two lateral walls 29, opposite the frontal face 28; and the tightening member 3 is arranged laterally with respect to these shaped notches, in order to form notches on the side of their open portion, constituting a passage 34 for a fixing longitudinal beam 4 which is arranged in readiness on the roof of the vehicle to be equipped. Each support 2 is fastened to the longitudinal beam 4, by fully tightening the screw 5 in order to clamp the longitudinal beam 4 in the passage 34.
