Method for supplying power and power supply installation for ships with propeller shaft generators. A method for supplying power for ships with at least one synchronous machine 1 as propeller shaft generator consists of the power from the propeller shaft generator(s) being divided into two supply networks, a first network 7, in which voltage and frequency follow the voltage and frequency of the propeller shaft generator, and a second network 6 in which the voltage and frequency are kept constant. The first network, comprising 85-95% of the power consumption, is used to supply electric motors, pumps, compressors, ventilation systems, air conditioning systems, etc., and the second network is used to supply navigation and communication systems, steering engines, lighting and similar installations which require constant voltage and frequency. The power supply system for the implementation of the method therefore comprises a three-phase rectifier circuit 3 and a DC/AC transformer circuit 5 positioned between the propeller shaft generator and the second network. By this means there is achieved a saving in fuel and considerably reduced wear and tear on the consumption units which are connected to the first network, and these consumption units can be made to regulate themselves automatically so that they only carry out the work necessary. In addition such a power supply is cheaper to set up than the known supply systems, as frequency and voltage regulation is avoided for part of the network. <IMAGE>
