The invention relates to an apparatus for heating up the end of a tube of plastic, in particular of crosslinked polyethylene, comprising a heating head which can be heated up by means of a heating element and on which a heating spigot and a heating bush are attached in such a way that they form a sleeve-shaped receptacle for the end of the tube of plastic. In order to avoid with certainty overheating of the plastic during the heating-up operation, the invention envisages that the heating spigot and the heating bush have a continuous, preferably diametrically directed light channel formed by aligned bores, that outside the heating bush the ends of the light channel are connected to a light transmitter and a light receiver and that, on reaching the crystalline melting temperature in the end of the tube of plastic introduced into the receptacle, and the associated transformation of the plastic from the translucent state into the transparent state, an optical and/or acoustic indication signal can be derived via the occurring output signal of the light receiver.
