Process for the regeneration of the biological stages of sewage treatment plants

It occasionally happens that the biological stage of sewage treatment plants fails, when the catabolic bacterial cultures are partly or completely destroyed as a result of overloading or technical faults. The biological stage is rendered functional again by allowing the residual culture still in the tank to recuperate on its own. The adaptation time, in which the bacterial culture specific for the sewage treatment plant forms again from the residual culture, is long and can extend over a plurality of weeks. To accelerate the regeneration, a starter culture, which corresponds to the specific bacterial culture of the sewage treatment plant, is added to the biological stage. The starter culture is obtained by removing and storing sewage sludge during normal operation of the sewage treatment plant. Expediently, part of the water content of the sewage sludge is previously removed. Freezing and storage are preferably carried out in liquid nitrogen.
