PURPOSE:To efficiently prevent the sulfide stress corrosion cracking of high- tensile strength steel in contact with the atmosphere of an aqueous solution of pH below 5 contg. hydrogen sulfide at high concentration, by anodically polarizing said steel. CONSTITUTION:The high-tensile strength steel which comes in contact with the atmosphere of an aqueous solution of pH below 5 contg. hydrogen sulfide at high concentration is held at potential in the range of -0.7--0.5V against a saturated calomel electrode or in the range of potential nobler than the spontaneous corrosion potential of said steel but up to 0.2V. The life until breakdown is remarkably prolonged in said potential range. At potential much nobler than said potential range, the rate of hydrogen penetrating into the steel is further reduced, but anodic dissolution becomes violent so that the life until breakdown is abruptly shortened. |
