A method of producing a flemish eye on the end of a rope and a flemish eye device In forming flemish eyes at the ends of wire ropes to produce e.g. slings, loops of the required size are formed by bending the rope back upon itself, end lengths of the rope extending from the loop, and known as the tails having their component strands naturally laid on the main body or standing part of the rope. It has been proposed to enclose the naturally laid strands in a cylindrical ferrule adjacent to the loop and introduce a hardenable anchoring material, such as a resin, into the sleeve to complete the anchorage. Serious difficulties arise when forming the anchorage for the spliced loops if the rope is of large diameter, and it has now been found that improved loading distribution on a wire rope (1) can be obtained through providing an anchorage for the loop (7) in the form of a ferrule (2) the end portion of which adjacent to the loop (7) comprises a collar (5) having a cylindrical bore (11) and enclosing rope material of the tails (8) laid along the helical interstices of the main body or standing part of the rope (1), and the end portion of which remote from the loop (7) comprises a socket (6) having a frusto-conical bore (12) diverging in the direction away from the cylindrical bore (11) and enclosing laterally spread components of the tails. |
