PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF METHACRYLIC ACID ESTERS

Isobutylene or tert-butanol or methacrolein was oxidized to give methacrylic acid mixts. contg. CH3COOH, etc. and extd. by a solvent which was prepd. by adding mathacrylic acid ester 15-50 wt.% to a water-insol. inert org. solvent with b.p. >120≦̸C. Methacrylic acid soln. was sepd. from the extd. soln. by distn. and esterified with excess alc. with b.p. < 100≦̸C. The produced mixt. was extd. to be recovered unreacted alc. by the use of inorg. salts such as (NH4)2SO4. Methacrylic acid ester with a high purity was prepd. by removing materials with a low b.p. and sepg. unreacted methacrylic acid.
