Thermoplastic pipes having a socket at one end are formed using appts. comprising a cylindrical central mould (12) which is movable vertically from a position where its axis(19,20) is parallel to and above the axis of a socket forming mandrel to a position where the axes conincide and the central mould and mandrel can be moved towards each other. The appts. is claimed. The pipe blank extends from an open end of the central mould where it is formed by the mandrel to form a socket. Sockets can be formed at both ends.
