PURPOSE:To automatically extract an outline of an object to be machined with a part partially recessed part from an image data composed of a group of two-dimensional coordinate points with a comparatively coarse density, by setting the prescribed area around the end point of a dot string extracted from the two-dimensional coordinate groups and sequentially extracting the outermost point in the area as the next point of the dot string. CONSTITUTION:For searching the next point comprising an appearance, a circular area D4 with the prescribed radius, which uses the final point P4 of the dot strings obtained so far as a center, is set, and points in the circular area D4 are searched. Here, a unique point 32 lies in the circular area D4, and is extracted as a next point P5. Then a circular area D5 with the point P5 as a center is set, and dots in said area D5 are searched, thereby obtaining a next point P6. When dots in a circular area D7 with the prescribed radius are checked, two points 33 and 34 lie. In such a case, a right-hand dot with the smallest angle made counterclockwise with respect to a line segment 35 connecting a point P7 and a previous point P6 is extracted as a next point. Here the point 33 is extracted as the next point.
