PURPOSE:To prevent the sticking of the splashes of molten metal in the stage of charging on the side walls of a casting mold for ingot making of Ti-based metals and to improve yield irrespectively of the types of melting furnaces, by using calcareous refractories in lining the inside surfaces of the side walls of said mold. CONSTITUTION:Raw materials such as, for example, sponge Ti or the like are pressed 1 to a compact 2 and many of the compacts are welded 3 to make a bar-like compact 4. This compact is used as a comsumable electrode 61 in generating arcs between the same and the molten metal 8 in a casting mold 71 in a primary vacuum arc furance 51, whereby the electrode 61 is melted and cast into the mold 71 and a primary ingot is obtained. The plural ingots are joined together and a secondary ingot is obtained in the similar manner. Globules drop into the casting mold upon melting of the electrode in this case and the splashers stick on the side walls of the casting mold, thus generating defects on the surface of the ingot. The side walls 18 of the mold 17 are then lined with calcia 19 over the entire surface and a bottom plate 20 is made of copper for the purpose of electric conduction. Thus, the sticking of the splashes on the walls 18 is prevented, and even if the splashes stick thereon, the splashes are emelted when the melt level rises, whereby the smooth surface is obtained. |
