A source of waste heat (1), for example, a power transformer, has its cooling-fluid circuit coupled to the heating circuit of an adjacent building (14) by a series of hydraulic circuits (8,9,12). The positioning of this heat-pump (2) which produces high-temperature heat, is removed from the heat source to the building to be heated. Heat from the primary source (1) is transferred in a conventional heat exchanger (10) to a secondary circuit (9) containing a suitable fluid such as water. The heated fluid, at a relatively low temperature, is pumped the relatively large distance to the building, thus minimising heat loss in transit. Heat is abstracted from the secondary circuit by a heat pump which includes a compressor (4) and a one-way valve (6). A tertiary circuit (12), using a conventional thermal fluid, conveys heat to the radiators (13) and hot water system (16). Valves (22,23,24,25) allow the heat pump to be removed from the circuit and the secondary and tertiary circuits linked.
|
