The process proposed according to the invention relates to the manufacture of leather. Limed hides are subjected, before tanning, to a pretreatment in a first step by means of polymers comprising carboxyl-containing monomers and in a second step by means of compounds containing aldehyde groups. This makes it possible to reduce the nitrogen pollution of the waste water (effluent) and to substantially improve the leather quality.
