The invention relates to a process for utilising the sensible heat of raw coke oven gas which, after leaving the coke oven, is subjected to a water spray in a receiver and then purified in a mechanical separator by removal of entrained solids and liquid droplets. It comprises cooling the hot gas at about 80 DEG C, leaving the separator, in a coolant vaporiser to a temperature of about 55 to 60 DEG C, which is above the dew point of naphthalene, and then, in a precooler, to the temperature suitable for the intended further processing in a secondary recovery plant, flashing the coolant vapour generated in the vaporiser in a turbine and condensing the flashed coolant in a condenser, whereupon the condensate is compressed again to the pressure prevailing in the coolant vaporiser and introduced into the vaporiser.
