Telephone set with an answering machine and a first memory disposed inside its housing which contains signals for generating synthetic speech for the purpose of conveying a message to a caller, with a first decoder which converts the signals contained in the first memory into speech signals, with a further corresponding memory forming a plug-in module which furthermore contains control signals to which a second decoder responds in order to activate a switching element, where, in response to control signals contained in the further memory, in the conversion of the signals contained in the memories into speech signals, a switchover to the first memory for further signal output occurs until a signal resetting this condition appears.
