<p>A method and apparatus for containing an annular body of liquid about a sleeve (13) spanning the abutting ends of pipe lengths (11, 12) and firing a charge of propellant (30), such as fast burning smokeless powder, in the liquid so as to radially shrink the sleeve (13) into sealing engagement with the pipe lengths (11, 12). If desired, the pipe lengths (11, 12) can be internally supported to avoid the possibility of collapse. Hard annular elements (16, 17) may be interposed between the sleeve (13) and the pipe lengths (11, 12) to produce better mechanical locking.</p> |
