Abrasive material on underlay with novel base material

The invention relates to the production of an underlay which is improved in comparison with paper and cheaper in comparison with finished fabric for the production of high-quality flexible abrasive materials. The production of the underlay is performed in the following way: a suitable adhesive is applied to a layer of paper or film. A thermally or chemically bonded nonwoven is laminated thereupon with a high peel strength. The further processing of this underlay into a finished, flexible abrasive material is performed in a known way, it being possible for the paper side and the nonwoven side or the film side of the underlay to be strewn with binder and abrasive grain. The finished flexible abrasive material can then be processed in a known way into endless abrasive belts or other manufactured forms. The abrasive performances of the finished abrasive belts correspond in the case of the strewn nonwoven side to those of high-quality abrasive cloth belts at lower costs overall, in the case of the strewn paper side to those of paper belts with a substantially increased resistance to tearing and tear propagation.
