To monitor the stream (5) of molten metal emerging from a casting ladle (1), the said stream is scanned line-by-line by an infrared scanner (29) arranged at a distance from it or imaged on a linear diode array (13) or a pyroelectric array of a raster scan camera (10) which is read out line-by-line. The process of scanning or reading out line-by-line is matched to the speed of fall of the stream (5) of molten metal. The video signals of the infrared scanner (29) or of the raster scan camera (10) are input, after analog/digital conversion, into an image memory (25) with a monitor (26) connected to one of its outputs. <IMAGE>
