What is disclosed is a process for setting an offset printing press, which consists of a plurality of process steps, namely the inscribing of inscription lines and adjusting marks in each of the printing plates, the attachment of the printing plates to a press cylinder, the reading-out of the adjusting marks by means of a sensor and the execution of an automatic adjustment in respect of both the direction of rotation and the lateral direction of the plate cylinder of the printing press and the rotation of the printing plates on the plate cylinder. A device for carrying out the process consists of a marking inscription device with a marking inscription portion and a data preparation portion. The marking inscription portion consists of a table for the fixed clamping of a printing plate and of an inscribing head which is movable to any point on the table. The data preparation portion is so designed that a plurality of data necessary for actuating the inscribing head can be prepared, that these data can be converted into a mechanical system of coordinates, and that the data can then be transmitted into the marking inscription portion. Another embodiment of a device for carrying out the process consists of an automatic inscribing device which is composed of a combination of a marking inscription portion and of two detector sensors. One of the detector sensors is arranged on the inscribing head for the purpose of inscribing intercolour adjusting marks, while the other sensor performs the automatic adjustment of the printing plates.
