An A/D converter for generating a digital Gray code signal from an analog signal having a particular rate of change contains a coding device which, responding to the analog signal, outputs an output signal of coding voltages in bit-parallel form from a lowest-order bit to a highest-order bit. The coded voltages represent the amplitude of the applied analog signal. Responding to the coding voltages, an amplifier device outputs an output signal in bit-parallel form in such a manner that when the rate of change increases, the bit accuracy increases from the lowest-order up to the highest-order bit.
