The invention relates to a process for the preparation of the ammonium salt of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid by reaction of the acid in aqueous medium with at least stoichiometric amounts of ammonia, an aqueous saturated solution of the ammonium salt of acrylic acid or of methacrylic acid being used as the reaction medium and gaseous ammonia being added and room temperature not being substantially exceeded during the reaction and the subsequent working up.
