The welding device for welding studs (8) or the like, having at least one ignition tip (9), to a workpiece (10) has a piston (3) which is displaceably mounted in relation to the housing (1) of the device, carries a stud holder (5) and lies in the discharge circuit of a welding capacitor (34); an actuating mechanism which initiates the welding operation and to which a striking pin (16) under the action of a spring (18) is allocated for acting on the piston (3) in the axial direction during the welding operation; and also a control circuit preventing a welding operation from being triggered before the device is put onto the workpiece. In order to avoid in particular endangering the operator, the striking pin (16), constructed separately from the piston (3) and mounted in such a way as to be displaceable coaxially relative to the piston (3) and in an isolated manner, is acted upon in the direction away from the piston (3) by the spring (18) allocated to it, is arranged in the control circuit run via the piston (3) together with stud (8) and the workpiece (10), and can be acted upon in the direction towards the piston (3) by a solenoid (20) which can be switched on via the actuating mechanism. <IMAGE>
