The invention relates to a method for transmitting colour pictures over a narrow-band link, in which the video signal picked up by means of a video camera and split into its colour components is temporarily stored in three digital frame buffers and is then read out as a narrow-band signal at a slow clock rate. In receive mode, the same frame buffers are fed from the narrow-band link and supply on the output side a colour television picture by being read out 50 times per second.
