The periscope consists of identical housing halves (10, 12) and a detachably inserted optical system which is composed of two prisms (32, 38), one or two safety-glass panes (36, 42) and two mounts (34, 40). Together with the mounts, the prisms and safety-glass panes form one or two preassembled and sealed structural units which are inserted using permanently elastic sealing material into the housing parts. This structure facilitates and economises on repairs. Since the prisms do not need to be large, the periscope is not too heavy even when glass prisms are used. <IMAGE>
