PURPOSE:To decrease bath voltage and to improve electrolytic efficiency in a horizontal type electrolytic cell of a diaphragm method by providing cathodes of special shapes to discharge gaseous hydrogen accumulating in the spacings between cation exchange membranes and the cathodes quickly. CONSTITUTION:A titled electrolytic cell wherein the chamber is segmented to upper and lower chambers by means of horizontal cation exchange membranes 3, the anode chambers 1 in the upper part are delineated of covers 4, side plates 5 of the anode chambers and the top surface of the membranes 3, and the cathode chambers in the lower part are delineated of the bottom surfaces of the membranes 3, the side plates of the cathode chambers and cathodes 17. The above- described cathode plates 17 have parallel recessed line grooves, and the projecting line parts thereof are so provided as to face the bottom surfaces of the membranes 3 in proximity thereto. There are catholyte charge ports 19 and catholyte discharge ports 20 on the side plates in the cathode chambers and the catholyte circulates in the recessed line grooves. A separator 21 which separates gases from the catholyte discharged through the ports 20 and a means for charging the catholyte separated of the gases to the ports 19 are provided. |
