Apparatus for the remote control of an electrical load by means of duplex carrier frequency transmission along a length of power line supplying power to said load comprises first transmission and receiving circuits coupled to the length of power line at or towards one end thereof and a second transmission and receiving circuit coupled to the length of power line at or towards the other end thereof, the first transmission circuit being operative to transmit control signals to the second receiver circuit along the length of power line at a first carrier frequency, and the second transmitter circuit being operative to transmit control signals to the first receiver circuit along the length of power line at a second carrier frequency, wherein the power supply to the load along the length of power line is only maintained while coded signals from the first transmitter circuit are successfully identified by the control receiver circuit and coded control signals from the second transmitter are successfully identified by the first receiver circuit.
