Piezo-electric ceramic couplers are manufactured by a method including screen or otherwise selectively printing or plating spaced-apart electrodes (2, 3, 4, 5) on opposite faces of an unpolarised piezo-electric ceramic body (1) and bonding them thereto. The electrodes are aligned in pairs (2, 3 and 4, 5). The body is heated to near its Curie temperature, a polarising voltage is applied between the electrodes of a pair and then the body is allowed to cool to well below its Curie temperature whilst still applying a polarising voltage between the electrodes of each pair. Thus the body is polarised only under the electrodes and the region (6) between the electrodes is of relatively high resistivity and is unpolarised. This enables small dimensions but relatively high dielectric strengths to be achieved between the electrode pairs. <IMAGE>
