If an ink for ink jet printing comprising water and a water soluble direct or acid dye additionally contains at least 20% by weight of a compound of formula [I] CnH2n+1-)(OCH2CH2m-OH wherein 2</=m</=6, and m + 1</=n</=m+3 the composition will be protected from evaporating and clogging a printing nozzle, while drying rapidly once it has been printed on to paper.
