A machine for assembling needle roller bearings comprises a loading mandrel 21 having angularly-spaced roller receiving grooves 23 in the periphery thereof, feed means for feeding rollers to a loading station adjacent the mandrel, means for rotating the mandrel to permit rollers being; fed into the grooves as they pass the loading station, means for preventing the rollers from falling out of the grooves during the loading operation, a sleeve 27 mounted adjacent one end of the mandrel and adapted to abut one end of the rollers in said grooves, means for supporting a cup-like member in register with said mandrel, means for advancing said mandrel and said sleeve into the cup-like member and means for withdrawing first the mandrel and then the sleeve. The mandrel 21 which receives the rollers from a shoot 14, that is kept full by a hopper 10, has the same number of grooves as the number of rollers which are to be loaded into the bearing cup, and is rotated by a rack 26 which engages a tooth portion of the mandrel shaft 22. The rack is driven by a double-acting cylinder 43 and the stroke is sufficient to cause the shaft to make one complete revolution. The rollers are prevented from falling out of the grooves by the wall of the bore 20. Surrounding the mandrel shaft 22 is the sleeve 27 which has an inside diameter such that it passes easily over the mandrel 21 but will push the rollers out of the grooves. The mandrel shaft is moved axially by a cross-head 40 actuated by hydraulic means 41, 42. The cross-head also moves a nozzle 29 which injects grease into each bearing cup immediately before it is filled with rollers. The bearing cups are pushed along a path 33 by a reciprocating piston 34. The path 33 includes a spring-loaded bar which is notched to position the bearing cups at the loading station 28 and 32. In operation, the mandrel 21 and the sleeve 27 advance together to feed rollers into a bearing cup at the loading station 32, and the mandrel is withdrawn while the sleeve is held stationary, by a latch so that the rollers are displaced from the grooves in the mandrel into the cup where they are retained by the grease. |
