PURPOSE:To cause an intense swirl in a combustion chamber, by providing a rotary valve to extend across an intake passage eccentrically thereto to conduct intake air to one side of the passage so that the air flows along one side the inner wall of an intake port. CONSTITUTION:When an engine is working under low load, the relativelystrong negative intake pressure in an intake manifold 17 is introduced into the negative pressure chamber 32 of a negative pressure diaphragm unit 30 to move a diaphragm 31 rightward against a spring. As a result, the spindle 20 of a rotary valve 18 is turned through a rod and a lever 29 to rotate a valve element 19 to a position shown by a full line in the drawing, to cover a part of an intake port 16. For that reason, intake air flows along one side of the intake port 16 as shown by an arrow C, as that an intense swirl is caused in a combustion chamber 13. When the engine is working under high load, the negative intake pressure is so weak that the valve element 19 is turned to a position shown by a chain line. As a result, the efficiency of charging into the combustion chamber 13 is kept high. |
