The fibre specimen (17) is rendered parallel using means known per se and opened up to such an extent that the individual fibres finally move at a constant rate past a measuring member (51) which determines the length of each fibre by a simple time measurement. This time measurement permits formation of a number of length classes, to which there is assigned the number of the measured fibres (39) for a specified quantity of fibres. The measured values can be further analyzed in an evaluation unit (55) and used to form statistical parameters for the fibre material (17). The movement of the individual fibres (39) past the measurement member (51) can be performed by depositing the fibres on a uniformly moving surface (41) or, instead, by directly arranging the measurement member (51) behind a nozzle (32) from which the individual fibres can be blown at a rate which is at least approximately constant. <IMAGE>
