Operating building of modular construction having the shape of a right prism of octagonal cross-section made up of a load-bearing structure of metal tubes forming vertical frames (1, 2, 3) to which panels (5) making up the walls are fixed, the said frames being fixed, on the one hand, to an octagonal base peripheral tie anchored to the ground and, on the other hand, to a braced upper peripheral tie which supports the ceiling. An external covering (15) of the octagonal structure forms, when seen in plan, substantially sharp-cornered dihedrons (25), while the internal covering (5) of the octagon forms rounded vertices (7) so as to create, between the two coverings (5, 15) within the thickness of the wall of the building, in at least one of the vertices of the octagon, a vertical channel (19) intended essentially for the escape of the stagnant air. <IMAGE>
