A fuel injection nozzle for delivering fuel to an internal combustion engine is of outwardly opening construction and has a valve head (15) in an aperture of a valve body (10). In the closed position the valve head touches a seat (13). The valve head and the wall of the aperture form straight cylindrical parts with a clearance which is so large that no fuel flows through when the valve head is lifted from the seat. The valve head forms a flow path including a duct (26) with an opening (25) on the straight cylindrical part (21) of the head. The opening of the flow path is closed by the wall of the bore when the valve head is in the closed position and progressively uncovered when the valve head moves off the seat. <IMAGE>
