When paper pulp is bleached with an alkaline peroxide solution and pretreated with an acid solution, it has been found that, while preserving the mechanical properties of the pulp, its lignin content is considerably reduced if the treatment with the acid solution is carried out at temperatures of at least 50 DEG C.
