A fuel injection nozzle of outwardly opening construction has an aperture (12) with a straight cylindrical wall in which a head (15) of a valve element is located. The head has a straight cylindrical part (24), which may or may not form a clearance with the wall of the aperture (12) which is large enough to permit a flow of fuel when the valve head is lifted from a seat (13). The body (10) has a flow path formed by a bore (25), which opens towards the wall of the aperture at a point which is gradually uncovered by the straight cylindrical part (24) of the head when the head moves off the seat. <IMAGE>
