The rectangular or trapezoidal frame of the appts., has two parallel branches (1,2) carrying upper and lower external plane bearing surfaces (2,4) respectively, and one transverse branch (5) with an external plane bearing surface (6) orthogonal to the planes of the other two surfaces. The other transverse branch (7) forms a handle with a guard (11) to ensure correct placing of the hand and fingers. Between two adjoining branches (e.g. 3,5) a sensor (8) measures the angular displacement between e.g. the lower bearing surface (4) and a horizontal plane. The output signal from the sensor is applied to a digital display (9) situated near the handle (7) and controlled by a pushbutton switch (10). The sensor (8) may be a spirit-level, strain-gauge or other device capable of giving an angle-related output.
