In order to monitor the straightness of a rod-shaped or tubular specimen (1), the latter is rotatably supported in the region of its ends in the horizontal position by means of the supports (2, 3). In the case of very long, slim specimens (1) the latter are additionally rotatably supported in their middle region by means of a support (4) in order to avoid excessive sag. The specimen (1) supported in this way is set rotating about its longitudinal axis by means of a drive unit (6), and the power consumption of the drive motor is determined by means of a measuring instrument (7) during this rotation in order to determine the torque to be expended in the process. The deviations in the torque characteristic which occur during this rotation correspond in this case to out-off straightness of the specimen (1). <IMAGE>
