The inflatable retainer is for use by a vehicle passenger, comprising a flexible casing supplied with gas under pressure by a gas generator. The casing consists of a tubular belt (1) woven from longitudinal chain stitches (3) and double-wound elastic weft threads. One thread holds the belt in the rest position and breaks on inflation, while the other is strong to limit the extension of the weft. One end of the belt can be secured inside a tubular component moulded onto it, and fitting oVer a gas generator secured to the vehicle chassis.
