In a method of measuring the moisture content of materials, a resistance of the material is determined by measuring probes and fed into a computer unit which converts this input value into a suitable output value for indicating the moisture content. The object is to modify the method, in conjunction with a suitable device, so that it can be applied to a multiplicity of different materials and yields very accurate measurement results. To this end, it is proposed to determine the output value in the computer unit by a material-specific mathematical function whose coefficients are automatically determined by the computer unit on the basis of specified measurement values to be fed in which are made up at least of different moisture values for the material. A device is used for this purpose whose computer unit comprises a microprocessor for determining a material-specific mathematical function from the specified measurement values fed in.
