The invention proposes a semi-continuous casting method for metals which comprises stepwise feeding of the molten metal (4) from below into a mould (1) as far as a dummy bar head (2), the holding of the latter in the mould (1) to form a casting crust (6) of predetermined thickness and the widthdrawal of the strand from the mould (1) by a withdrawal step while simultaneously feeding molten metal into the mould (1) in a quantity corresponding to the withdrawal step. According to the invention, the molten metal (4) continues to be supplied after the original charging of the mould (1) with the molten metal (4) and after the replenishment of the mould (1) with the molten metal (4) after each withdrawal of the strand from the mould (1) by a withdrawal step and removed from the region of the dummy bar head in a quantity of 0.1 to 0.9 times the useful volume of the mould (1); in the holding time, a portion of this quantity of the molten metal (4) is then fed back at least once into the strand to be formed and removed again from the region of the dummy bar head (2) and, during the completion of the formation of the strand, the main part of the said quantity of the molten metal (4) is introduced into the strand to be formed and the movement of the molten metal (4) up to the final solidification of the strand is set.
