In an axle counter for rail vehicles, magnets (2, 3) are provided parallel to a travel rail (1), the magnetic field of which magnets is deflected by a wheel (4) of the rail vehicle in such a way that contacts of the axle counter (5) are actuated and signals are transmitted to a counter and evaluator. A magnetic field probe (7) which responds only to a magnetic field of the rail vehicle is assigned to the axle counter (5) in such a way that when actuated said probe prevents counting signals from the axle counter (5) being passed on. <IMAGE>
