PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by oxidizing 1,1-diaryl- 2,2-dichloroethylene with nitric acid using an aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbon such as dichloromethane, chloroform, etc. as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:The benzophenone derivative of formula II (Ar and Ar' are unsubstituted or substituted phenyl) is prepared by oxidizing 1,1-diaryl-2,2-dichloroethylene of formulaIwith stoichiometric amount of nitrogen (5-7mol per 1mol of the raw material) in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, etc. The amount of the solvent is preferably 1.0-3.0pts.wt. per 1pts.wt. of the starting compound of formulaI. EFFECT:The amount of nitric acid can be reduced remarkably. The solvent can be recovered easily, and in some cases, can be reused. |
