Decarbonization of steel material is prevented by applying mixt. of 10-500 pts. wt. of metallic A1 per 100 pts. wt. SiC powder in amt. to give 10-1000 g/m2 of SiC on the steel material. A solid coating type oxidn. inhibitor is then applied and the steel material is heated to a temp. at which carbonization would normally occur. In an example a steel billet for wire rods was coated with mixt. of 100 pts. wt. SiC powder, 150 pts. wt. Al powder and small amt. of polyacrylic ammon in amt. to try 50 g / m2 SiC and oxidn. inhibitor was applied in amt. of 0.7 kg / m2. The coated billet was treated at 1130 ≦̸C for 5 hours.
