A device serving for locking a pivotable vehicle door located in its closing position is proposed. The device has a closing bolt arranged preferably on the door frame and directed at least essentially towards the pivot axis of the door. Furthermore, the device has a gripping element which is preferably mounted pivotably on the vehicle door and which has an open-edged gripping slot, the width of which is coordinated with the diameter of the closing bolt and into which the closing bolt extends when the door is closed. In this operating state of the door, the pivot axis of the gripping element extends at least approximately parallel to the axis of the closing bolt. The gripping element is operatively connected to an actuating drive executing a to-and-fro movement for pivoting the gripping element, so that the locking of the vehicle doors is taken over by the actuating drive. If all the vehicle doors are correspondingly equipped, a central locking of all the doors of a motor vehicle is also possible. <IMAGE>
