An apparatus for filling and closing bags (1) is set up for extracting the air from the bags by suction. It has on the conveying device (10, 11), feeding the bags to the individual processing stations (I-VIII), suction nozzles (20) which each place themselves against a hole (7) in a wall (2) of a bag and extract air contained in the bag through the hole by suction. Sealing punches (40) for closing the hole after evacuation are pressed in alignment with the suckers against the other wall (3), so that the two walls are tightly joined to each other around the hole by means of an annular sealing seam (9). <IMAGE>
