A process for preparing a multilayer cation exchange membrane used in the electrolysis of an alkali metal halide to form a halogen, alkali metal hydroxide, an hydrogen, comprising heating at least two incompatible fluorinated polymers having functional groups selected from sulfonyl and carboxyl to a temperature above the melting point of the polymers, coextruding the polymers to a composite film, cooling to a temperature below the melting point of each film and then converting the functional groups to ionizable functional groups. The resulting film exhibits improved resistance to delamination in the electrolysis cell.
|
