In a discontinuously operated absorption heat pump, unsaturated solvent flows in a first phase from a container (1) to a stripper (3), in which refrigerant is driven off and, after a separation in the container (1), is liquefied in a condenser (4). Heat is liberated here. During a second phase, the hot solvent flows from the container (1) through a heat exchanger (6), where heat is liberated, and back to the container (1). During a third phase, liquid refrigerant flows from the condenser (4) through an evaporator (5), where it takes up heat from the surroundings. The evaporated refrigerant then reaches the heat exchanger (6) and, in common with circulating solvent, the container (1). It is absorbed again by the solvent, heat being liberated in the heat exchanger (6). During the then succeeding fourth = first phase, a circulation from the container (1) via the heat exchanger (6) to the stripper (3) and back to the container is switched in when the solvent becomes weak in refrigerant. The heat supplied to the stripper (3) is liberated in the heat exchanger (6), i.e. a direct heating operation takes place. <IMAGE>
